Abuse of Power Under Mahathir

Mahathir has been on the defensive recently as the MACC zeroes in on the source of his family’s fantastic wealth. The MACC recently announced that the two sons of former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad have declared assets worth over RM1.2 billion (S$365 million). Not bad for the grandson of a rubber tapper. Then, as if by clockwork, Mahathir posted a scathing “lecture” on social media, indirectly calling the investigation an “abuse of power.” This is not the first time Mahathir has made such statements, as he has been engaging in attention-grabbing behaviour since his retirement during the Sheraton Move. The reason for this behaviour is quite apparent, as Mahathir has been embroiled in a bitter feud with Anwar Ibrahim, almost seemingly in a one-sided manner. Of course, Mahathir has not taken the investigation lying down. He has, after all, filed an RM150 million lawsuit over claims that he amassed wealth for personal gain while in power. He also stated that all his children...

Ilham Tower is Only the Tip of the Iceberg

In another salvo fired by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his pursuit for revenge, The multi-million-dollar Ilham Tower, a prime commercial building owned by the family of former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, has been seized by Malaysia’s anti-graft agency, sources say, in a sharp escalation to an ongoing probe into controversial transactions by corporate entities previously controlled by the one-time ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). We don’t really have to go back in time to see the questionable going-ons seen within Mahathir’s inner circle. Take for example on August 29, 2018 the shares of Opcom, a company engaged in the manufacture and sale of fiber optic cables and cable related products in Malaysia. rose 41.11% in a day. The reason? The Pakatan Harapan government had approved a RM 21.6b National Fiberization and Connectivity Plan. There is no doubt that the fiberization of Malaysia is sorely needed – and the large amount of money that has been committed thus far i...

Kesan Domino Kronisme Mahathir

It's Not Opcom's First Time

In what is the latest of a series of salvo in the never-ending Mahathir vs Anwar drama, PMX Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim brought attention to a fiber optic contract worth RM214 million awarded to a company that included members of Mahathir's family on its board. Anwar asserted that Mahathir had utilised his positions as prime minister and finance minister to grant the contract to Opcom Cables Sdn Bhd in 2003. Most importantly, this approval was given before Mahathir's resignation as prime minister in late October 2003. During the Umno general assembly, Mahathir had publicly announced his intention to resign more than a year prior, in June 2022. Anwar's defense statement further explained that on September 15, 2003, Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) sent a letter to the Ministry of Finance (MoF) requesting approval to engage in direct negotiations with Opcom for the supply of fibre optic cables valued at RM214.2 million. Anwar emphasised that TM is a government-linked company where the ...
